Good Day,

Wednesday morning dawned overcast, drizzly and blustery winds but by late afternoon had turned to a gorgeous warm evening with a spectacular sunset over the dale. It was Will's last day and I organized Dave on the winch with Peter and Will and Joe to haul up the timber that had been delivered the end of last week. This is a labor intensive process as two people below the landing stack and wrap winch cable around four boards, these boards are 3"x8" x 13' in size and very heavy after treatment requiring two strong people to lift them. The cable is fed through several pulleys to control the angle of the winched boards, which arrive 60' higher up the landing and then are stacked by Dave and his upstairs helper. Once that is done the upstairs helper grabs the winch cable and banzais down the tip to help stack and tie up another load of boards while one of the two below climbs the stairs and awaits the delivery of the boards on the landing. Repeated till done or in this case till about 1:00 p.m.

At 1:p.m. I drove up to Durham University Hospital to see Byron who had a bone marrow test done that morning and took up some of Kerith's cookies and a few more books. He was not in his room or bunk he had hiked the long corridors out and down to ground floor to go out to the traffic circle and have a pipe, I caught up with him on the way back. We chatted till about 3:00 p.m. and as I was leaving Roger and Fiona from St. John's showed up. I got back about 5:00 p.m. in time to see the final laying of the rail with the newly fixed rail bender. Got home about 6:00 p.m. and while showering Kerith got a phone call that Byron was discharged and to come and pick him up. Some problems with that as Will had an appointment to see Joe Forster's collection. After some discussion I went and got the van from Dave and took off for Durham again while Kerith and Will would take the Audi into Stanhope for the 7:00 p.m. appointment with Joe Forster and as it was Wednesday night we would meet at the Black Bull in Frosterley for pizza. The van is not as fast or agile as the Audi so it took about 50 minutes to get there but Byron was ready to go, just had to wait for clean wheelchair, his meds where not ready at the pharmacy so I would need to come back the following day. We made it to Frosterley just after Kerith and Will had ordered. Byron had already eaten but opted for his first beer in two weeks. All three pizzas arrived at the same time and we drove home to a glorious sunset.

Sadly that promise of great Thursday did not materialize. Thursday morning dawned very chilly... about 9C or 48F and never rose about 11C or about 52C the entire day. As the day progressed the weather worse till by late afternoon you could practically sail out of the mine. Thursday I left with Will about 9:00 p.m. to take him to Darlington and the train station, I should have allowed more time but Kerith had told me the train was due in at 10:55 into London and it turned out to be 9:55 which is when I arrived. So Will missed his train and had to take another. I then wended my way out of Darlington and took the A1 to Durham and back to University Hospital to pick up Byron's prescriptions after some wait and got back into St. John's about 1:30 p.m. Changed and drove back out to the mine in time to do a bit of collecting though without much success and help Dave load the holes. We stayed late to set off a blast as Dave and the rest of the crew are off today. Dave is off to Crofts for the weekend and has 4 races and a bike still in several parts. Kerith had dinner for us of ham and leek pie with green beans and bacon which went well and after dinner I called Jeremy Rowe to see if I could copy some things I needed and we had a nice chat up there till about 9:00 p.m. and back down that 18% grade to Burnbrae.

This morning is cool but clear skies and blessedly no wind but likely lots of midges.
