The Jewel Box Pocket 2007 to 2008

In mid-July 2007, after having driven about 50 meters of barren tunnel and several crosscuts, a new section of fluorite-containing flats was discovered on the east side of the vein. The pocket, later named the Jewel Box produced a limited amount of material over the summer, but on what was literally the last day of operation before closing the mine for the season some very high quality specimens started to come out. We were unable to extend the collecting season because oflooming committments such as the Denver Show, but arranged another trip back afterwards to carry on. On the third weekend in November the entire crew returned for a week of collecting more of the pocket prior to the Tucson show. That late in the year things were already beginning to freeze in the quarry, so collecting was done without the aid or water or power tools. Regardless, over 30 high quality specimens were recovered over the course of a few days.

Returning to the mine in late May, 2008, collecting continued at the Jewel Box Pocket, but by early July the fluorite seam was pinching down and had become quite brecciated. Ultimately, the pocket turned out to be fairly small, but yielded some of the best specimens found in the mine.
